The history behind Vellies

Whether it is referred to "Vellies", "Velskoene" or "Veldskoene", all share the same origin. These leather shoes were first made in the 17th century by the first Dutch settlers in South Africa. The name means "field shoe" or "skin or animal hide shoe". Either way, these shoes were made of raw hide and were used as footwear in the Great Trek by the Voortrekkers. Colloquially known as Wupperthal skoene, Clanwilliam Vellies or Velskoene, these shoes have been sought after for many years.

Why is this place called after Tolla van der Merwe?

The building that currently houses Tolla se Sentrum, has a long and colourful history. It had been Municipal Offices and Town Hall for many years. Many meetings, events and weddings were held here.
